Javier Mascherano has scored his 1st goal for The capital on Wednesday night, and he has Gerard Pique to thank for his first attack.
Ivan Rakitic was gearing up to bring the 67th-minute spot-kick but was directed by Pique to hand over the liability to the former Liverpool man.
And Mascherano tucked it away with aplomb to hit the back of the net for the 1st time since getting started with the club in August 2010.
Rakitic stated of Mascherano’s goal: ‘I wanted to take it, but Pique said to let Mascherano get it, and he was right – you have to hear to the president. I feel it was perfect.’
Former Manchester United defender Pique has recently said he wants to become club leader when he retires.
The 30-year-old defender rose by way of the ranks at Barcelona before investing four years at Old Trafford before returning to the Nou Camp in 2008.
Pique said: ‘I don’t see personally as a manager. I don’t believe I would enjoy it as much.
‘As a chief executive, I could do well for this club, because it’s what I am enthusiastic about. My playing career will [one day] come to an and the move I’d like to take is to become Barcelona president.’
Barcelona is level on elements with rivals Actual Madrid at the top of the group, but Zinedine Zidane’s side has an activity in hand.
